The International Food Project was created out of a love for food. Not just any food, but good, international food. The downside with recreating international dishes with online recipes at home is that they are often slightly off when compared to the memories of a delicious dish. That is not to say that they are bad, but just not the same. Short of spending an exuberant amount of money at a restaurant, finding a good recipe is very difficult for the home cook.
This project can be broken down into two major phases that will alternate depending on travel plans. The first is the Research Phase in which one or both of the authors are traveling and experiencing the world's food in all its glory. All topics in this phase will be about dishes purchased abroad that are noteworthy eating endeavors worthy of being reproduced at home. Other topics that will be discussed include famous eateries, markets, and other foodie things. The second phase is the Creation Phase in which the dishes will be recreated at home, using recipes found online or in cook books in order to best prepare a representative dish from the regions traveled. Some will be good and some will be epic failures, and the most deserving will be recreated in successive iterations over time until the recipe is correct. Other topics in this phase may include visiting ethnic grocery stores to get a specific item for the dish, and other inspirational creation topics.
About the Authors
Jeremy and Angie appear to be the typical couple on the surface. Jeremy has recently completed his Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering and Angie is pursuing a PhD in the same field. However, two similar passions under the surface tie them together unlike any other couple. Those passions are simple: food and travel. While Angie's number #1 passion is all things food - cooking and eating, Jeremy's is exploring the world. Flip the two and you have their second favorite past-times, and a dangerous combination when together. While not trained chefs in any form at all, Jeremy and Angie yearn to recreate international dishes at home and scour many cook books and online sites, sparing no cost, to recreate the best tastes from around the world at home.
Jeremy is an international traveler and eat-it-all foodie. At the time of opening the site, he has visited 25 unique countries and is off in early August 2010 on a one way ticket to explore Asia and the rest of the world while blogging about it on Living the Dream. Prior to dating Angie, he has never explored cooking and is quickly learning the techniques of the trade making tasty dishes as a sous-chef to Angie.
Jeremy's favorite travel spot is Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland, favorite food is Crab Rangoon, and favorite dish had while traveling is Moussaka in Luxor, Egypt.
Angie is a food lover and up-and-coming traveler since meeting Jeremy. Owner and primary author of The Chubby Grad, Angie writes about her adventures in cooking while maintaining a college student's budget. Since dating Jeremy, she has finally traveled outside of the United States for the first time since she was a baby, visiting Canada and many Caribbean Islands. She will be meeting up with Jeremy in the food capital of the world - Singapore - before flying to Thailand for vacation over Christmas 2010.
Angie's favorite travel spot is Dominica or anywhere with mountains, favorite food is any type of Thai Curry, and favorite dish had while traveling is a Mallorca in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Countries Represented on the Project
So far, Angie has had limited exposure to international travel, which will be changing significantly in the coming years. However, their combined experiences around the world has allowed for interaction and consumption of many culture's cuisines including the following countries and islands:
USA, Canada, Bahamas, Mexico, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, England, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France, Greece, Egypt, Jordan, Puerto Rico, St Thomas, Barbados, Dominica, St Lucia, St Kitts, St Maarten
A Little Help To End World Hunger
A secondary scope of this project is to help highlight and assist in ending world hunger. We are lucky enough to have the ability to travel, eat the best food around the world, and buy any ingredient at home for creation of tasty meals. However many individuals around the world are not as lucky. We are accepting donations through this site to donate to Heifer International to help feed the hungry around the world. In addition to direct donations from our readers, 20% of all advertising income brought in from this site will be donated to the charity as our match to your readership. The tally on the side will be updated continually to track the donations that have been received for our site.
As a personal goal, we would like to ask all readers to donate the equivalent amount to one dinner at home for your family in order to help those in need be able to eat for many, many meals. The cost of one dinner at home can give a family abroad a flock of chicks to raise sustainably for the future. All donations on this site go directly to charity and never cross our hands in the process.
So, now that you know a little about the project, come see what kind of tasty creations are possible and then get out there and do it yourself!
